The cafeteria will continue to provide great lunches and snacks for students in the safest way possible this year. We will always meet or exceed Alberta Health Services regulations and precautions related to COVID-19. While students are allowed back in the cafeteria this year, many protocols to keep shared touch surfaces to a minimum and to keep students distanced from non-cohorts will be implemented.

This year we will return to providing pre-set meals to Grades K through 5 to their classrooms. Grades 6 through 9 will return to picking up their lunches at the cafeteria counter for their scheduled cafeteria days, or will be brought to their classrooms. All student lunches need to be pre-ordered on the My Kids Spending website. By using the My Kids Spending website, you will be able to add money to your child’s account, order lunch, review previous purchases and more. The one site does it all. Please read the FAQs below to understand how to access the site and your child’s account.

Our cafeteria staff are here to serve your child. Please let your child know if there are any problems with their lunch to let one of the staff know and we will do our best to assist them and rectify any issues. Younger children especially don’t know what to do if there is a problem so, please reassure them we are there to look after them and that they can approach any staff member if they need help.

Cafeteria FAQs

How do I cancel a pre-ordered lunch?

Should your child not be attending school on a day you have ordered lunch, up to 7:30 AM of the day the lunch was ordered, you can log on to your My Kids Spending account, navigate to that day’s menu, then scroll to the bottom of the drop-down menu and click ‘Cancel Choice’. If it is past 7:30 AM on the day you are canceling, please email by 9 AM to cancel the lunch. We require your child’s name and class number and will process a refund for that lunch. Cancellations received after 9 AM the day of the lunch, will be in process and will not be refunded.

How will the cafeteria work this year?

This year we will return to providing pre-set meals to Grades K through 2 at their assigned cafeteria seat. Grades 3 through 9 will return to picking up their lunches at the cafeteria counter. To assist in faster distribution of lunches and to minimize line ups, we ask that all student lunches in all grades be pre-ordered on the My Kids Spending website. By using the My Kids Spending website, you will be able to add money to your child’s account, order lunch, review previous purchases and more. The one site does it all.

Can my child purchase items from the cafeteria if they haven't been ordered?

Yes, but we encourage parents to pre-order lunches in advance whenever possible. Pre-ordered lunches will be billed automatically at the cut-off time for the day ordered. Purchases made in the cafeteria are put through at the cafeteria cashier. Students have a unique 4-digit pin code that they will enter on a sanitized keypad. Please remind your child that this code should be kept private. If they do not know their code the cashier will look it up for them by their name. To speed the cashier process, we do ask that students get to learn their code. Cash will be accepted as per usual however we strongly ask you to consider just using the student account. This will assist with less touch surfaces and it allows you to view all purchases made by your child on the MyKidsSpending website.

What are the cafeteria hours?

Until further notice the cafeteria will not be open prior to school starting in the mornings. Cafeteria Staff will be available from 8 AM to 1:30 PM daily. As the school year progresses, we will regularly evaluate what services can be added back while maintaining COVID protocols.

Will the menu items offered be different than before?

COVID has required all food service operations to evaluate and streamline menu offerings. The cafeteria menu offerings are slowly returning to our normal offering. The food supply chain has been greatly impacted by COVID-19 and has still not returned to normal. Because of this, some products may not be available from time to time and substitutions may be made without notice. We will limit this as much as possible but appreciate your understanding should it take place. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate through the next couple months.

Monthly lunch menus will be posted on both the My Kids Spending website and on the GCA website. The My Kids Spending site will show menus one week at a time. They are updated every Friday at 1:00 PM for the following week. You can order for as many days as you wish once they are posted, you do not have to order everyday. You can go back into the account at anytime and make changes to a lunch order up to 7:30 am of the day the lunch is ordered for.

Have the prices changed?

In the past, menu pricing for meals has been done on a cost averaging basis. There was a set price for small and large meals that was the same regardless of the actual meal. With the current volatility in the food market and the fluctuating costs of the individual meal packaging now required, each meal will be individually priced to reflect the actual cost of each meal. The prices for each meal will be displayed on the drop-down ordering menus when ordering on the My Kids Spending site.

How do I access my child's cafeteria account to order food?

  1. Navigate to
  2. Enter your email address and password you used when you first registered on the My Kids Spending website (if you have not previously registered, click on the ‘create account or add student’ button and follow the registration steps)
  3. If you do not recall your password, you may click the ‘send password’ button and an email will be sent to your email address to reset your password
  4. Once logged in, you will see your student’s name and other information, simply click on the ‘order meals’ button
  5. This will open the calendar for the week. You can then click on the drop-down menus for the day you wish to order and select items. You can only select one item per drop down menu category
  6. Once you have selected the items for the days you want to order for, click on submit
  7. THE ORDERING CUT-OFF IS EVERYDAY AT 7:30 AM, at that time, that day’s orders will be closed and sent for processing. Once processed you will receive an email confirming your order. Should there not be enough funds on the account for what is ordered, you will receive an email letting you know the order could not be processed. PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR CHILDS ACCOUNT HAS ADEQUATE FUNDS TO COVER ORDERS PRIOR TO CUT OFF TIME OR THEY WILL NOT BE PROCESSED. Please understand that this is a feature of the automated ordering system and not the cafeteria staff.

How do I add money to my child's account?

The easiest and most efficient way to add money to your child’s account is to log into the My Kids Spending website as per the instructions above and add money with credit card or direct bank transfer. You can also send a cheque payable to Carter Ventures Inc. with you child to give to their teacher or the cafeteria cashier. Please do not send cash with your child. As part of our COVID protocols we ask parents to limit coming to the cafeteria to make deposits. Students who have debit cards may also make payment that way.

My child is a new student. How do I set up an account?

Your child’s account will be created on the system early the first week of school. You will then need to go into the My Kids Spending website to complete the account set-up. You will need a code to complete the registration which if asked for on the web site may take a couple days to reach you. You can also obtain that code by emailing the cafeteria at the email address below. Once you have that code, set-up takes just a few minutes and will activate the account immediately. FOR THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL, WE WILL ENSURE ALL STUDENTS CAN BUY THEIR LUNCH REGARDLESS IF THE ACCOUNT IS COMPLETELY FUNCTIONING. The account will show a negative balance for any purchases made during this time and funds to cover the arrears can be added once the account has been set-up. This will ensure parents have enough time to complete the account information.

Lunches will still be available for purchase even if they have not been pre-ordered. However, we ask all families to pre-order as often as possible to assist the cafeteria staff in maintaining our COVID-19 protocols and to speed up lunch distribution. Snacks, desserts, and beverages will be available for purchase without pre-ordering.
