Tuesday - Build Day One

The day that was supposed to be filled with rain was filled with sunshine and rainbows (literally). After a hearty breakfast, we made our way to the Onion to play a fun cup game, sing some worship songs, and then head out to our work sites on the bus.
With the sun shining on each of the sites, we got to work. The Green and Orange Team’s builds were a shorter distance from the base, while the Purple Team was the furthest distance. For many of our students, it was their first time using a hammer. For others, it was easy. Paint was definitely something that made its way onto plywood, drywall sheets, and T-shirts via hands. We all noticed the variety of very cute dogs who wanted to visit (but no touching!). The valley echoed with the sound of roosters crowing. The students worked tirelessly to keep up the pace needed for Day One. In between building, there were opportunities to bond with the kids in the families (and yes, “Six/Seven” exists in Mexico as well).
There were a couple of moments that required some spontaneity including the Blue Team’s main builder suffering from major elbow pain - thank goodness for Mr. Peter Schurmann - GCA’s Facility Manager and Blue Team leader who came to the rescue along with our student team. The Purple Team’s bus could only make it so far on the muddy road, leading to a longer (and muddier) walk to the site. These things were small snags, however, as the houses are already taking shape.
The kids were all absolutely fabulous today and you would be so proud of their tireless efforts. We are now in reflection mode in a station-based chapel where they are encouraged to connect with Jesus in a variety of different ways. It is beautiful to see the transformations happening.
Now here's the sad part: I have been attempting to upload photos for the last three hours to no avail. I apologize that I am unable to get them up for you! It is my hope that tomorrow morning I will come back into the dining area and have better luck. That said, we got some amazing pics from the day. Again, I apologize for the wait... hopefully the anticipation will be worth it!
Right now, please continue to pray that the rain stays at bay and we are able to have two more days of lovely sunshine to build these homes in (and we are really sorry about the snow, by the way…).
